Thomas Paine.

I have nothing to base my assumptions on except his published works. It is impossible to say with complete certainty that Thomas Paine supported any party.  The only words he reportedly uttered were printed in his pamphlets. (something that I miss is the printed word). Argue if will what he meant, but there is no denying that he said it. One of my favorite quotes is "A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice". Another is "Character is much easier kept than recovered". I'll leave you with this "Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one".
