The Darling of the Religious Right Representative Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a San Diego Republican and Vietnam War flying ace, wasn't a wealthy man when he arrived on Capitol Hill in 1991, but in recent years he has lived like one. His home in Washington was a rent-free yacht provided by a defense contractor. In San Diego, he bought a mansion using the profits from a home sold to the same contractor.
Cunningham, who became the Vietnam War's first fighter ace after shooting down five enemy aircraft, will be the latest Republican lawmaker leaving under a cloud of ethics questions.
Ron Nehring, Republican Party chairman in San Diego County has distanced himself from Cunningham hoping that the Duke's problems won't effect the party.
