Grand Theft America

The American system . . . assumes the eternal imperfection of the political order, that no leader or policy is beyond question and criticism and debate. It assumes a constant re-examination and evolution through the input of the citizenry. That is what we call democracy.

Those who charge people with treason or lack of patriotism whenever they criticize Bush's actions fail to understand that demanding unthinking obedience to the president is intself the most un-American of act. . . . Americans are bound by a set of principles, none higher than the idea that no government is above questioning and criticism.
